Why an App?
A big part of how Gooee works relies on devices. For lighting and sensors, these devices need to be commissioned into buildings to be connected to the system. Traditionally, this was all done manually. The embedded team came up with a way to scan bluetooth devices and commission them via Iphone so we got the change to make a proof of concept app to help facilitate the commissioning process.
💡R&D
The research for this app was very different than most I've done. Since the commissioning was done manually prior there was a big chance to learn about how lights and sensors are commissioned. Most was done via Postman and through a gateway interface that scanned for bluetooth devices on a laptop.
🚧 Constraints
Since the app that was created initially as a proof of concept didn't have most of the features we were designing, there were some assumptions to be made. The bulk add functionality was completely new so we had to keep communication with developers to confirm the technical feasibility of what we were designing. In the end, less of a constraint because we got to work with Steven!
💅 Outcome
The Gooee Connect app was met with nothing but praise. Commissioning was now as simple as being in a building and having an internet connection.
A big focus was put on user feedback. We didn't want engineers standing in construction sites wondering why things weren't working.
🤔 Reflecting
I'm happy with the app we ended up putting out. If I could change anything it would be the ability to iterate more after watching engineers use the app to see how else we could make their life easier.
